    In KS3 English we study the following topics :

    • prose, poetry and drama texts
    • three key areas of focus,  ‘Inform, Explain, Describe’, ‘Imagine, Explore, Entertain’ and ‘Argue, Persuade, Advise’
    • non-fiction: biographies and autobiographies; newspaper and magazine articles; editorials; brochures and leaflet; letters; emails
    • fiction: short stories, novels of various genres (humour, sci-fi, historical fiction etc)
    • moving images (adverts, film extracts, music videos)
    • Shakespeare:  ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, ‘Twelfth Night’, ‘The Tempest’
    • poetry
    • preparation for GCSE: previous AQA ‘Anthology’ poems, ‘Of Mice and Men’

     Assessment :

    • three internal assessment points per term – Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening
    • written and verbal feedback on each assessment coupled with individualised targets for every student
    • written and verbal formative feedback is given between assessment points
    • students self-assess and peer assess their work against clear and specific success criteria

    Learning beyond the classroom :

    • read, read, read! Students should read a range of texts including fiction and non-fiction
    • listen to audiobooks and ‘listen again’ radio programmes and podcasts
    • read local and national news websites and discuss stories/issues with parents/carers
    • watch films of texts studied and consider similarities/differences
    • create  and learn personalised spelling lists
