    In KS4 English we study the following topics :

    • poetry (from the ‘literary heritage’ and contemporary pieces in the AQA Anthology)
    • prose (likely to be either ‘Of Mice and Men’ or ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’)

    • drama (likely to be either ‘An Inspector Calls’ or ‘Kindertransport’; Shakespearean texts may include ‘Richard III’, ‘Macbeth’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’)

    • how to write creatively and analytically for a range of audiences

    • how to read and evaluate non-fiction texts analytically

    • how to analyse ‘spoken language’ such as ‘multi-modal talk’ (text messaging, email, Twitter, Instagram), ‘spoken genres’ and changing social attitudes to language (Dual Entry only)

    • how to improve our own spoken communication skills through Speaking and Listening tasks

    • how to understand the social, historical and cultural context on and of texts

    • how to work independently and think with originality and insight

    Assessment :

    • external examinations and controlled assessment

    • GCSE English only : one 2hr 15min exam (60%) and controlled assessment (40%)

    • dual entry: GCSE English Language – As above plus GCSE English Literature –two exams, one of 1hr 30mins(40%),  one of 1hr 15mins(35%) and controlled assessment (25%)

    • internal assessment at least once a term on writing and/or reading and speaking and listening – written and verbal feedback provided with personalised targets

    • peer and self assessment against exam/controlled assessment mark schemes

    Learning beyond the classroom :

    • read, read, read! Students should read a range of texts including fiction and non-fiction.
    • read local and national news websites and discuss stories/issues with parents/carers
    • listen to audiobooks and ‘listen again’ radio programmes and podcasts
    • watch films of texts studied and consider similarities/differences
    • attend lunch and after school revision sessions
    • complete past papers and follow Twitter revision feeds/revision blogs and websites
