Thirsk School

& Sixth Form College

    Level 2 & 3 BTEC

(Please note: Level 2 is KS4 and Level 3 is KS5)

    What do we learn about?

    • Performance skills (L2 and L3)
    • Composing skills (L2 and L3)
    • The Music Industry (L2)
    • Creating a music product (e.g. a CD) (L2)

Level 3 also offers a more flexible selection of units, which we tailor to individuals. In the past, these have included:

    • Studying Music from Around The World
    • Working and Developing as a Musical Ensemble
    • Popular Music in Practice
    • Musical Theatre Performance

    How is students' learning assessed?

    • Unit 1 – The Music Industry (L2) is assessed in a formal written exam
    • Subject staff internally assess all other L2 and L3 units.
    • Informal feedback is given throughout the course, and we encourage students to help each other (peer-assess)
    • Students are encouraged to be reflective learners, and a number of the BTEC units at Levels 2 and 3 require students to review, appraise, and justify opinions (self-assessment).

How can students learn beyond the classroom?

    • Students are encouraged to as much research as they can into the genres of music they’re studying, as the ability to compare a range of styles will help gain merit and distinction grades.
    • There is no substitute for playing music regularly – as a soloist or as part of a band. Students should seek out opportunities to perform both in and outside school.
    • Our BTEC students have supported Lower School classes – either by performing to them, or by talking to them about areas they have been studying.
    • Listen to as much music as you can – from as many genres as you can!

Who teaches in this subject area?

Mrs L Dickson - Head of Department

Mr O Pierce-Williams - Teacher of Music and Head of Year 11
