    Textiles

In KS4 Textiles we study the following :

    • using research skills and looking at fashion and textiles products available around the globe
    • learning about different fabrics and textiles techniques
    • keeping an up to date sketchbook and portfolio of our project work and design ideas
    • producing patterns and the constructing our own clothing
    • making appropriate use of colour, line, shape, texture, pattern, harmony, contrast and/or repetition in their work
    • appreciating form and function and, where applicable, the constraints of working to a brief
    • textile methods, such as fabric printing, tie-dye, batik, spraying, transfer, fabric construction, stitching, felting and fabric manipulation

    Assessment :

    • GCSE Textiles has 2 units of assessment, unit 1, a portfolio of work, marked out of 80 and unit 2, an externally assessed task, lasting 10 hours
    • production of practical and critical/contextual work in one or more area(s) including fashion and costume, printed and/or dyed fabrics and materials, domestic textiles, constructed and/or stitched and/or embellished textiles
    • personal portfolio (coursework) is approximately 45 hours controlled assessment (60%)
    • externally set task is worth the remaining 40% and is prepared for and then sat in class over a 10 hour period
    • both units are internally assessed and then externally moderated at the end of year 11
    • peer and self-assessment, using the exam board's assessment objectives is a fundamental part of the course

    Learning beyond the classroom :

    • a keen interest in fashion and textile design will be of great advantage to students when researching and developing their own ideas
    • reading around the subject using newspaper and magazine articles will help broaden their knowledge and aid the completion of their Textile design portfolio
    • practice of clothing pattern completion and textile techniques is crucial to securing the highest grade
